O LACO é um tentáculo da Cátedra UNESCO para a Sustentabilidade do Oceano, vinculado ao Instituto Oceanográfico (IO) e ao Instituto de Estudos avançados da USP (IEA). Atua na intersecção entre arte e ciência, promovendo imaginação crítica e especulação futurista. Como galeria oficial da São Paulo e da Rio Ocean Week, a iniciativa promove exposições e feiras de arte, aproxima artistas, cientistas e comunidades costeiras para investigar e traduzir, de forma tecnológica e poética, os desafios contemporâneos do mar.
Por meio de cartografias participativas, residências na Base Clarimundo de Jesus (Ubatuba) e exposições imersivas, o laboratório entrelaça pesquisa oceanográfica e práticas estéticas (visuais, digitais, etc), gerando obras, publicações e cultura oceânica. O LACO, através da Cátedra do Oceano, faz parcerias com organizações como TBA21‑Academy, British Council, Galeria Pivô e outros grupos de arte e ciência de toda a América do Sul, além de parcerias locais com institutos, escolas, associações, populações locais e culturas tradicionais. Sua missão é converter conhecimento científico em ação pública e ampliar a noção sobre o que é natureza, através do uso de microscópios, telescópios e satélites. Seu objetivo é reinscrever o oceano na imaginação coletiva ao conjugar rigor acadêmico e engajamento social, fortalecendo ecossistemas marinhos e as comunidades que deles dependem, através da arte.

LACO is a tentacle of the UNESCO Chair for Ocean Sustainability, linked to the Oceanographic Institute (IO) and the Institute of Advanced Studies of USP (IEA). It operates at the intersection of art and science, fostering critical imagination and futuristic speculation. As the official gallery of the São Paulo and Rio Ocean Week, the initiative organizes exhibitions and art fairs, bringing together artists, scientists, and coastal communities to investigate and translate, by technological and poetic means, the contemporary challenges of the sea.
Through participatory cartographies, residencies at the Clarimundo de Jesus Field Station (Ubatuba), and immersive exhibitions, the laboratory weaves oceanographic research into aesthetic practices (visual, digital, etc.), generating artworks, publications, and ocean culture. Via the Ocean Chair, LACO partners with organizations such as TBA21‑Academy, the British Council, Galeria Pivô, and other art‑and‑science groups across South America, as well as local collaborations with institutes, schools, associations, local populations, and traditional cultures. Its mission is to convert scientific knowledge into public action and broaden our notion of nature through microscopes, telescopes, and satellites. Its goal is to reinscribe the ocean in the collective imagination by combining academic rigor with social engagement, strengthening marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them through art.
